July 2018, Norwich University campus.

Final class project, Norwich MBA

Class of 2018.

Competing groups apply their learning examining existing small businesses with specific recommendations.

The best pitch wins the competition.

Nothing to do with Dreamlike Pictures – the group that worked on us – won the competition.

Dreamlike Pictures was selected to be a part of the 2018 MBA Leadership Summit. I agreed without actually knowing the ride I was about to take. The challenge I set was:

          1. 3 years of flat growth and

          2. We were not well known even in our geographical area.

          3. Our niche combining deep strategic marketing and video was weird.

The team assigned to my company were all already working professionals who returned for their masters. This was very important to me. Education is one thing; real world work experience is another. As scary as it was to have my life under a microscope, I welcomed the invasion. When you are a small business it’s all but impossible to step back and take a magnifying glass to all the components of your company including yourself. They dug into everything – our finances, my customers, our films, our marketing specifically our web site. To cut to the chase – my brief time at Norwich was life changing. For both my company and my focus, from that weekend in July, to this very day, I have a different mindset. I came back to our studio with a ‘TO DO’ list of 38 items, most of which I did not see coming, and have not for a second stopped acting on.

Of the thirty eight, recommendations, these were the key takeaways:

          1. Top of the list – scrap your website – it can’t be fixed. It sucks! DONE! Ton of work but it’s helped a ton.

          2. Embrace Google SEO and analytics I ‘hated’ this but it’s done and we do! I get SEO now.

          3. It’s clear you are very good at what you do. You have a real niche. Important untapped area you bring ‘real

authentic beauty’ for businesses. You are not known and not easy to find on line. Nice to be acknowledged

          4. Break the bubble of not networking DONE. I am out more and telling my story to the world.

          5. Embrace Linkedin it’s the bedrock of business to business in the US and globally. DONE Our # 1 priority

          6. Change your company name. This was tough love – I Still think about it, and have a ‘semi plan.

At the end of the day, I was the one who received the real education, and I am forever grateful for the time both Norwich

University and the graduating students put in on my behalf. I will never forget it.
